Is Turnitin a plagiarism detector

Lots of people have different impressions about Turnitin  like what it is, what it does, how it works and many other questions that pop up in the users minds or in any other persons mind who has just heard about it. Unfortunately, many of these impressions are based on misconceptions and lack of knowledge about turnitin. It is often said that turnitin detects plagiarism. This is one of the biggest misconception that people have in their minds.
But isn't that what Turnitin is, a plagiarism detector? No, Turnitin does not detect plagiarism. Turnitin just finds the text that matches other sources in the vast Turnitin databases and shows those texts which match.  Now It is up to a human being to determine whether those text matches are a problem or not. For an example: plagiarism.
The Turnitin originality report shows the papers text highlighted with any text that matches sources found in the Turnitin databases containing vast amounts of web content, previously submitted papers, and subscription-based journals, blogs and publications. So mostly universities use it to check plagiarism but this must be kept in mind that it is not made to detect plagiarism it is made to match the content of the text with any other text available in the turnitin vast database.
